Mineral and electrolyte

What is potassium carbonate?

Potassium carbonate is the potassium salt of carbonic acid, chemical formula K2CO3. It used to be obtained from plant ash, hence its old name potash. In the kitchen it is still used today as a raising agent for traditional gingerbread. As a food supplement it serves as a source of potassium, since around 56% of its weight is potassium.

Potassium itself is a mineral and an electrolyte. Most of it is found inside the body’s cells. Potassium contributes to normal muscle function, to normal functioning of the nervous system and to the maintenance of normal blood pressure.

Information about Potassium Supplement Capsules – Potassium Carbonate with 840 mg Potassium per Day

About the product

Potassium supplement from potassium carbonate

Potassium carbonate, once known as potash, is around 56% potassium. Three potassium capsules contain 1.5 g of it and provide 840 mg of potassium. That is why the pack states both: the amount of the salt and the amount of potassium you actually take in.

Why deliberately below the reference intake

Potassium is found in many foods, especially vegetables, fruit, potatoes and pulses, so part of your requirement is usually already covered. Our daily serving adds 840 mg, which is 42% of the reference intake. As a supplement, more is not usually needed.

What potassium does in the body

Potassium is an electrolyte and is mainly found inside the cells. It contributes to normal muscle function, to normal functioning of the nervous system and to the maintenance of normal blood pressure.

When to check with your doctor first

The kidneys regulate potassium levels. If you have impaired kidney function or take medication that can raise potassium levels, such as certain blood pressure medicines or potassium-sparing diuretics, only take potassium after consulting your doctor.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What does the body need potassium for?

Potassium contributes to normal muscle function, to normal functioning of the nervous system and to the maintenance of normal blood pressure.

How much potassium per day do I need?

The reference intake for labelling (NRV) is 2000 mg. In German-speaking countries, an intake of around 4000 mg a day is estimated for adults. A large part of this comes from vegetables, fruit, potatoes and pulses. Our daily serving adds 840 mg.

Potassium capsules or potassium tablets – which is better?

What matters is not the form but how much potassium the daily serving contains and in which compound. Check that the potassium content is stated, not just the amount of the salt. Ours provides 840 mg of potassium from 1.5 g of potassium carbonate.

How should I take the potassium capsules?

Take 3 capsules a day, spread over the day, each with a glass of water.

What are the signs of low potassium?

Low potassium can only be reliably detected with a blood test. It mainly occurs with heavy fluid loss or with certain medications. If you suspect it, have it checked by a doctor rather than treating it yourself.

Who should not take potassium supplements?

People with impaired kidney function and anyone taking medication that can raise potassium levels, such as certain blood pressure medicines or potassium-sparing diuretics. They should discuss taking potassium with their doctor first.

Is potassium carbonate the same as potash?

Yes. Potash is the old name for potassium carbonate, because it used to be obtained from plant ash. In baking it is used as a raising agent, for example in traditional gingerbread.

How long does one tub last?

One tub contains 90 capsules. At 3 capsules a day it lasts 30 days.
