What does the thyroid gland do in the body?

The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland in the neck and one of the central control organs of metabolism. It produces the hormones T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine), which regulate energy metabolism in almost every cell of the body: from basal metabolic rate to body temperature, circulation, and concentration. The body needs iodine and the amino acid tyrosine to produce these hormones; selenium, as a trace element, is involved in their metabolism.
